Youwei Cheng / Mahxium Ogyen Chung (b. 1999) was born in Dêqên Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan. He is an artist, writer, and filmmaker currently based in London.
Mahxium’s practice constantly shifts from poetry to sculpture, moving image to installation and lived experience to performance. He translates and appraises tenets as of Emptiness (Śūnyatā) in structures, Self/Non-Self (Ātman/Ānatta) in identities and Uneasiness (duḥkha) in life. Each infers his practice into an approximation, that of the translated and the volatile: a walk, a glimpse, a touch, a situation, and an oversight. He usually describes his practice as a form of object-making and weighing, caught between a deathless artefact and a lively nothingness.
His works have been selected for group shows in both UK and China: Beijing Shijia Hutong Museum, Shanghai Exhibition Centre, London Cinema Museum and others.
Mahxium has written for exhibition preface, including the recent writing for Jianan Li’s solo exhibition “Mantianyou”, online and on-site in SHAN ZUN Gallery, Beijing 798 Art District.
